In his film, Rosa von Praunheim approaches the famous communist theater director Erwin Piscator by developing irreverent improvisations in the spirit of Piscator together with acting students from the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts in East Berlin. Interspersed with this are statements by theater professor Peter Jung, which serve as a biographical guide and shed light on the background of Piscator's epic and total theater.

Young Uli Merkel is an engineer and inventor. He has a wife and child and is primarily interested in his career. One day, he receives a strange assignment from general manager Zeim. He is to track down the former chief designer Heiner Rudolf in order to take his inventions out of his pocket. Rudolf, ridiculed at the time for his forward-looking work, had taken all his documents with him when he left. Now they are needed to fulfill an important export order. In his search for Rudolf, Uli begins to realize that he, the boy, is being used. He finally finds Rudolf as a gravedigger on the island of Rügen. The encounter reinforces Uli's doubts about the moral integrity of his mission. He gets out and stays there, while Rudolf accepts an offer from the general manager.

After the sudden accidental death of her husband, Ursula blossoms, takes over the business of the deceased and goes out again.

Josef Nötzli is a shy and somewhat awkward man. He has been working as an accountant in a chemical plant in West Berlin for 26 years. But Nötzli originally comes from Switzerland. Nötzli started out as an accountant and remained in this position. Due to a misunderstanding, Nötzli suddenly makes someone else's career. At last, Nötzli is able to put his knowledge and concepts into practice. With his ideas, he quickly steers the badly damaged company back into the profit zone. But it is precisely at this moment that Nötzli's high-flying career comes to an abrupt end: the mysterious misunderstanding comes to light and Nötzli is dismissed from his post, accused of deliberately obtaining a position by fraud. Together with his colleague Neubauer, Nötzli ends up back in the accounts department. Now nothing can keep him in the company. He leaves the chemical plant with his friend Neubauer. But is this farewell final?
